The power and ferocity of the Bear

The Bear is one of the most powerful and ferocious creatures of the Viking Age. Their imposing physique and attitude made them animals respected and feared by even the greatest warriors. Used as a symbol, the Bear brings courage, strength and fighting spirit. For Odin, the bear was a sacred animal which then inspired certain Viking warriors, the Berserkers, meaning "bear skin" or "to go wild". These warriors fought with the essence and spirit of the great Scandinavian bear. When they fought, they entered a state of Sacred Fury, berserksgangr in Old Norse meaning "allure of the warrior-wild". This state of frenzy was such that it was characterized as mystical.
