The Legend of Fafnir

The legend of Fafnir begins when Odin, Loki and Hoenir stone an otter to death before going to King Hreidmar. They offer to share the meat with him but the king recognizes in the animal his unfortunate son Otr who enjoyed fishing in the form of an otter. Hreidmar asked his two other sons, Fafnir and Regin, to imprison the murderers and demanded a large amount of gold as reparation. After betrayal and murder, Fafnir seizes the treasure and takes the form of a serpent-like dragon to protect it.
