Erik the Red was a colonizer, explorer and leader. He was banished from his country for taking part in a violent brawl. Subsequently, Erik the Red created a new reputation for himself by exploring Greenland and founding the first Scandinavian village there. One of his sons, Leif Eriksson, followed in his father's footsteps and led some of the first European explorations of the east coast of North America.
