The most commonly accepted etymology of the World Tree name is ygg ("terrible") + drasil ("steed"). This seemingly oblique epithet becomes clearer when one remembers that Yggr ("The Terrible") is a name sometimes used to describe Odin, and "Destrier" is a poetic allusion for the gallows. As such, the name of the tree itself alludes to the mythical episode of Odin's sacrifice on a huge ash tree. Although the name can also be interpreted more broadly as "horse terrible", this possibility does not have the mythical resonances of the previous option.
