The generally accepted meaning for "Yggdrasill" is Old Norse "horse of Odin", meaning "gallows". This interpretation comes from the fact that drasill means "horse" and Ygg(r) is one of the many names of Odin. The poetic poem Edda Hávamál describes how Odin sacrificed himself by clinging to a tree, making that tree Odin's gallows. This tree was possibly Yggdrasil. The gallows may be referred to as "Hangman's Horse" and thus Odin's Gallows may have evolved into the phrase "Odin's Horse", which then became the name of the tree.
