Yggdrasil is a huge mythical tree that plays a central role in Norse cosmology, where it connects the Nine Realms. The meaning of the term Yggdrasil is "horse of Odin", which means "gallows". This interpretation comes from the fact that drasill means "horse" and Ygg(r) is one of the many names of Odin. The poem describes how Odin sacrificed himself by hanging from a tree, making that tree Odin's gallows. This tree was possibly Yggdrasil. The gallows may be called "the horse of the hanged" and therefore the gallows of Odin may have developed the expression "horse of Odin", which then became the name of the tree.
