The Legend of Fafnir's Treasure
According to legend, the gods Odin, Hoenir and Loki unwittingly killed one of King Hreidmar's sons, Otr. The king then ordered his two other sons, Fafnir and Regin, to imprison these three gods and demanded an immense amount of gold to compensate him for this loss. Loki is then responsible for recovering this gold which he steals from the dwarf Andvari. However, he curses his treasure so that its owner loses his life. Loki gave this treasure to Hreidmar who was unwilling to share it with his sons. Fafnir and Regin then killed their father to seize it but Fafnir refused to yield half of it to his brother and forced him to flee by threat. He then took the apprenticeship of a serpent-like dragon and went to Gnitaheid to guard it.
